The New That Will Be New Forever

Summary

The newness of the New Year will soon be old. The new car will become an old car. The new house will become an old house. As long as we live under law of sin and death on this side of the world, the newness will be destroyed with the tyranny of time.

In fact, the world that we are living itself is heading towards its expiry date. It is good to begin every year with a great plan for future and a good hope for a prosperous and wonderful life, but it is also important to remember that our ultimate destiny is not tied down with the things that will be old very soon, but the things that will remain new forever.

In Rev 21:1-8, God promises to destroy everything that is subject to aging. Then, He promises to create new heaven and a new earth that will be new forever.

The destruction of the heaven and earth is sure and certain (Matt 24:35-42, Mark 13:31-33, Luke 16:17, and 2 Peter 3:10). The creation of the new heaven and earth is also sure and certain. John the disciple records in Rev 21:5, He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

The most exciting thing is that the new heaven and the new earth will not be the same. It will be a holy dwelling city where God himself will make His tent among us. He will be our King and he will govern and rule. There will be no more suffering, pain, and death. The old corrupt order will be replaced by a new order.

Nevertheless, not all will enter into the new Creation. There are seven types of people who will not find their place in this new creation: Coward, Unbelieving, Vile, Murderers, Sexually immoral, Idolaters, and Liars (Rev. 21:8). But those who are spiritually thirsty and those who overcome this corrupt world with the power of the Holy Spirit will inherit the new heaven and the new earth (Rev. 21:6-7). St. Peter reminds us in 2 Peter 3:11 to live a holy and godly life in view of the impending and certain coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. May the good the Lord enable us to live such a life.
